Kenshi map black area10/3/2023 The whole region can be considered "formally associated" but de facto independent in their conduct. If the emperor tried to collect any form of tax or tribute (if he could ever manage to do it) then the nobles could easily ignore it. If the Northern UC nobles don't send any support if they are attacked then they wouldn't be worse off than otherwise. While the UC cannot be trusted to come to your aid in times of crises (Bast comes to mind) by joining the UC you gain access to the upper echelons of the confederation and the Trade Guild which controls much of the commerce in Kenshi.Īs for disadvantages, there aren't any. They don't seem to pay taxes and can do whatever they want including hunting people. The UC is an extremely decentralised polity and the emperor is largely on equal grounds to nobles. Their obligations to the Emperor are minimal and the benefits are tangible. The question is if the nobles who control the area have anything to gain from independence.
